Why is Nylon such a useful item, and what is it used for?
Nylon is useful because it will not be damaged by oils, solvents or alcohol. It's very lightweight and is wind and waterproof. Nylon is very easy to color dye, and is also difficult to stain or damage, it's strong and difficult to tear. Some things that are made out of nylon are: track pants, shorts, swimwear, bed sheets, parachutes, flack vest, combat uniforms, tires, tents umbrellas and luggage. Recently nylon cookware has become very popular, it's been used as cooking utensils, such as spoons, spatulas and cake pans, this is because it is heat resistant up to 420° F, the utensils won't melt and won't scratch away the finish on pans with non-stick surfaces. Since nylon is very easy to dye and comes in lots of different colors nylon spoons can coordinate with any kitchen design. Wallace Carothers invented Nylon because he was an expert in polyester and because he worked at a University, and that led him to experiment and make it.
